The British Shuai Jiao Union (BSJU) is the official governing body for Shuai Jiao (Chinese Wrestling) in the United Kingdom.
The BSJU is a member of the World Shuai Jiao Federation (WSJF) and a founder the European Shuai Jiao Union (ESJU). The BSJU was established in 2005.
Since it's inception the BSJU had operated in partnership with the British Council for Chinese Martial Arts (BCCMA); although, changes in the governance arrangements,
at World and European level, now require the BSJU to operate as a separate official governing body for Shuai Jiao, in the United Kingdom.
Assessment Date
The BSJU usually admits members quarterly (January, April, July, and October).
Please check the
Events calendar for the next 'Intake and Assessment' date.
Selection Policy
Prospective adult members are required to meet a minimum standard in terms of physical fitness. The BSJU’s selection policy aims to treat all applicants fairly and equally irrespective of race,
nationality, ethnicity, gender, gender specification, sexual orientation, marital or parental status, religion, spiritual belief or creed, political belief, or disability.
All adult candidates must meet the minimum age specification of 18 years of age on the date of the assessment.
Proof of age in the form of identification with a photograph may be required, on the date of the assessment (e.g. passport or driving license).
Prospective child members (from age 12 years minimum), are required to meet a simple assessment of physical ability, and must be accompamnied by a parent or carer
during the assessment and in subsequent classes, unless the child is old enought to travel independently.
Pre-requisite – Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire
For the assessment you are expected to have completed the
Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire which should be submitted 14 days in advance of the advertised assessment day. If you are eligible for the assessment then you will be contacted by the BSJU Secretary, who will advise you of the date, time and location, which should be treated as confidential by prospective members. You must bring a medical note with you to confirm your physical fitness to participate in martial arts focused exercises.
You must arrive 15 minutes in advance of your designated assessment time.
If you have a communicable disease (airborne, and/or transmisable through close proximity or body contact), then you should follow
infectious disease guidelines
to ensure the safety of participating athletes and coaches. If you are unwell on the day of the assessment then you should contact the
BSJU Secretary prior to your scheduled assessment time, by email to confirm your non-attendance.
Attending the Assessment
For the assessment you should wear comfortable training clothes (tee shirt, vest, and tracksuit bottoms or martial arts pants) and trainers or martial arts shoes. If you have a Shuai Jiao uniform, then you should bring that with you. You may want to use a jock strap or wraps to protect yourself from risk or personal injury. If you require any form of medication (e.g. inhaler for asthma or insulin for diabetics) then you should ensure that you have this with you. You are advised to bring a bottle of water (room temperature) and towel with you. You are advised not to consume food for two hours before your assessment.
Please note that spectators are not allowed to attend the Assessment.
Assessment Process
The assessment process is recorded. It is designed to assess the three main categories of fitness: (1) aerobic capacity; (2) muscular skeletal fitness; and (3) body composition. It is composed of the following key fitness areas:
- Aerobic Capacity
- Body Composition
- Stamina and Endurance
- Trunk Extensor Strength and Flexibility
- Leg, Arm, and Core Strength
- Flexibility and Stretching
- Falling, Throwing, and Grappling Skills
Your identity, height and weight will be confirmed before the assessment. Your temperature, heart rate, and blood pressure will be taken at the start of the assessment process. You may be requested to check your heart rate at any point during the assessment.
Most of the fitness areas of the assessment process provide two or three test options, so most people, including those with disabilities, have the opportunity to participate. Any disabled person who is unable to complete the entire assessment will be given as much of the test as their physical condition permits.
You may be required to pair up with someone approximately your height and weight for some of the exercises. Your assessment for the paired exercise will be as a pair and as individuals within the pair. The aim here is to foster teamwork and collaboration.
If you are unable to complete a set number of repetitions or maintain practice during timed exercise, then a record of how many repetitions you were able to complete or how long you are able to endure in timed exercises will be made. Not being able to complete or last does not necessarily constitute a ‘fail’. You should aim to complete the assessment process to the best of your ability. If at any time during the assessment you feel unwell then you should notify your designated assessor and then sit out to recover.
Assessment Outcome
If you are successful then you will then be invited to formally become a member of the BSJU, through the Assessment. You will be issued with a 'Authentication Code' as an Individual member and be invited to attend an Accredited School and to participate in BSJU activities and events.
Until your membership has been approved your access to resource will be restricted.
If you are unsuccessful, then you may be eligible to take the assessment again, on the next Assessment Day.
As a selecting institution the BSJU want to ensure that all participants are able to perform at the required minimum standard with the intention to develop over time. Please note that attaining the minimum is expected during the assessment.
